Q: Joe my mom is flipping out at me because of the protein shake I ordered... She called my doctor and he explained how protein shakes don't work (Yeah o.k....) My doctor advised me to take a supplement called "boost." The protein I ordered is called Grow Whey. The one thing I did agree with my doctor on, is that certain proteins can come from countries like china that do not regulate what they sell. I would greatly appreciate it if asap you could get back to me on what you think of this protein, and the issue in general. I do want to make sure I am not putting crap in my body, but I need a protein shake so I can stop being a damn skinny bastard.

A: Robbie,
Your email has struck a nerve with me…one of my biggest pet peeves is when doctors give workout, diet or supplement advice! Just because someone went to medical school; this doesn’t mean that they are an authority on everything! In fact, a recent study indicated that 60% of medical schools in the United States are not meeting minimum recommendations for their students’ nutrition education. And don’t forget that the 40% of medical schools that do meet the nutrition recommendation are meeting the minimum recommendation – they key word being “minimum”! The bottom line is that almost no time is spent on nutrition in medical school! Yet, for some reason, people will still seek nutrition advice from their medical doctor just because they have the word “Dr.” in front of their name! Unfortunately, most medical doctors are too “proud” to admit they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about regarding nutrition!

I don’t think your doctor would be too happy if you needed surgery and you asked your nutritionist or personal trainer to perform the surgery! Yet, for some reason, most doctors have no problem giving advice on a subject that they know nothing about!

Should this man be giving nutrition advice?

It is true that you should stick with reputable brands when buying supplements. There are too many “shady” companies out there that use low-quality ingredients and fillers just so they can keep their costs down! It is much better – and safer – to spend a couple extra bucks on a quality product that works and is safe! I suggest you buy any protein powder or meal replacement shakes from Biotest, Beverly International or Labrada Nutrition. I have found these companies to be super high quality and very reputable.

The supplement you asked about (Grow Whey) is a perfectly safe product from a reputable company. (FYI, I don’t even consider protein or meal replacement shakes “supplements” – they are basically liquid food. It’s funny how parents have no problem giving their kids $5 to grab a couple slices of pizza or McDonald’s for lunch; yet they get worried about their children drinking a protein shake!) Just make sure that you are eating “real food” along with supplementing with your protein shake. If you don’t eat enough, you won’t gain muscle no matter how many shakes you drink!

Good luck…and make sure you’re nice to your mother!
