Q: Hey Joe,

Just a quick question for you.  Do you still have your athletes do stability ball bench?

I haven't done stability ball bench press in about six years, having seen one of my buddies spend 6 months in stabilization rings and rehab after the ball he was on exploded and the 70's he was pressing crushed his radius and ulna in both arms...

Just wondering if you still use this...if you see gains that make the risk worth the reward.
Thanks,

Josh L.

A: Josh,
Yes, we still have our athletes perform bench presses on the stability ball. BUT…we only perform this exercise on anti-burst stability balls!! You should NEVER perform ANY strength training movements (that require moderate to heavy weight) on a “regular” stability ball. Chances are – if you lift at a “regular” gym – the stability balls are not the anti-burst ones. The stability balls at most commercial gyms are meant for women to do crunches on; they’re not built for heavy dumbbell bench-pressing!! If you want to continue to perform strength training exercises on a stability ball, click HERE! That is the stability ball we use; it’s burst-proof up to 2500lbs. and it will deflate (not pop) if it’s accidentally punctured.

Don’t be fooled by the pink color; our balls are tough!!

Q: Joe DeFranco,

Joe I don't know why, but I went back and watched some of the 2007 NFL Scouting Combine.  Something Rich Eisen and the crew kept bringing up was that these kids were “manufacturing” speed. And that this speed is not “functional.”  Pardon my ignorance, but I thought that if you got stronger and worked on your technique that you would move faster anyhow.

Can you please explain this for me?  Thanks…. By the way, great Combine Prep e-book.
Silky Slim #19

A: Silky,
This is an interesting question that gets brought up all the time. I have a definite opinion on this subject.

Rich Eisen is half right…or half wrong (however you want to look at it)! I could only speak from personal experience, but here’s where he’s “half wrong”. I will give you the example of the “Miles Austin’s” of the world. Miles has always been a gifted athlete. He showed up at our doorstep a gifted athlete. He dominated at a small college but was considered a “step too slow” to play in the NFL. Miles ran a 4.6-second forty yard dash during his first week of training with us. He also weighed in at 240 lbs. After two months of intense training and dieting, Miles showed up at the NFL Combine weighing 218 lbs. and he ran a 4.4-second forty yard dash! Miles did not have “manufactured” speed; Miles physically changed his physique and he physically made himself faster. This was a lifestyle change for Miles. It has now been three years since the “Miles Austin Project” and he still weighs less than 220 lbs. and he can still run a 4.4. (In fact, his playing weight is down to 215 lbs.!) Because Miles was already a great football player with great instincts, his new-found speed and his new-found physique DID translate to his on-field performance!

Here’s Miles Austin the day before leaving for the NFL Combine…

Here’s Miles Austin the day before leaving for the NFL Combine…
At this point, he was an “unknown” kid from an “unknown” college…

And here’s Miles Austin today…surrounded by media and doin’ BIG THINGS for “America’s Team”…

Now here’s an example where Rich Eisen is correct…
A couple of year’s ago I had a college football player fly into NJ to train with me for just the weekend. This player trained at another facility for the NFL Combine and ran a slow 4.68 forty yard dash at the Combine. (He was a safety and NFL scouts wanted to see him run a low 4.5 or high 4.4.) His agent flew him in to see me for a “quick fix” because his Pro Day was in four days and it was his last chance to impress NFL scouts before the draft. Needless to say, he ran a 4.52 at his Pro Day after training with me for only two days. Did I make him physically “faster” in two days? The answer is, “No”! I tweaked his stance, corrected his first 10 yards and got him different shoes to run in! This, my friends, is what I refer to as “manufactured” speed. This kid is a “4.5 guy” on paper; yet he really possesses 4.6/4.7 speed. But, he got his ass in an NFL camp and played three years in the league because he silenced the critics with his “speed” at his Pro Day haha!!

Hopefully that gives you some insight on what I consider “manufactured” speed vs. “real” speed. We will continue to produce both types of speed at my facility!

Stay tuned for some more Combine and Pro Day freaks comin’ outa ‘Jersey again this year!!

This kid possesses “real” speed…

And he’s already showin’ off that speed as a rookie kick returner for the Jags!

Spoon is even fast in video games!!
