For the past 10 years, I’ve recommended that my athletes consume a high protein, low sugar snack before they work out. Furthermore, I’ve also recommended that they supplement this snack with the amino acid L-Tyrosine & Caffeine. The mood-elevating & performance-enhancing effects of this combination have been scientifically proven time & time again. Unfortunately, consuming these pre-workout ingredients is not always convenient for my busy athletes. Well guess what? I just made consuming the ultimate pre-workout ‘cocktail’ a whole lot easier!
Why Choose DeFranco?
Increase your mental focus, elevate your mood & enhance your physical performance with the scientifically-proven combination of L-Tyrosine & caffeine

What is the main
difference between your DeFranco Energy Bar and every other bar on
the market?
The secret
of the DeFranco Energy Bar lies in the “BIG 3” ingredients. The “BIG
3” consists
of (1)high protein/low sugar, (2)L-Tyrosine, (3)caffeine. NO other bar
on the market has these 3 ingredients in ADEQUATE amounts! When you combine
these 3 ingredients, they produce a synergistic effect. The effects that
I am referring to are:
- Increased energy / Performance enhancement
- Intense mental focus
- Feeling of “well-being”
- Suppressed appetite & decreased cravings for “junk” foods
When is the
best time to eat a DeFranco bar?
Below you will
find our recommendations for DeFranco Energy Bar consumption:
PRE-WORKOUT: For an intense workout, consume 1
DeFranco Energy Bar with 8-16 oz. of water approximately 30-45 minutes
before training or competition.
MEAL REPLACEMENT: When on the go, use the DeFranco Energy Bar as a convenient meal replacement. The appetite-suppressing effects of our high protein, L-Tyrosine & caffeine combination should keep you energized & satisfied until your next meal.
I
noticed that your DeFranco bar has high fructose corn syrup in it. Isn’t
this bad for you?
Here’s the deal; without adding some high fructose corn syrup, the bar would be uneatable. To make a long story short, we decided that the “good” in this bar FAR outweighs the “bad”. If you’re eating a balanced, healthy diet throughout the day, the little bit of corn syrup in your DeFranco Energy Bar will have no ill effects on your health or your physique.
You
keep mentioning the combination of L-Tyrosine & caffeine. Can you
expound on these 2 compounds and their performance enhancing effects?
For those of you that are interested in learning a little more about the science behind the amino acid L-Tyrosine and caffeine, here you go…
The Chemistry of Caffeine
Three main theories exist regarding caffeine’s performance-enhancing effects. They are:
Central
Nervous System Stimulation - Caffeine stimulates the CNS, which may help the athlete feel better and more alert. Along with this enhanced focus and clear-headedness, caffeine affects the CNS by stimulating the nerves to fire muscles into action more effectively.
Skeletal
Muscle Performance - The second theory focuses on the direct effect caffeine has on skeletal muscle performance. Caffeine produces changes in calcium activity, which stimulates the ion transport of potassium into non-contracting tissues. The ion transport leads to a reduction of the typical rise in plasma potassium concentrations occurring during exercise. It is theorized that lowered potassium levels in the plasma help to maintain the excitability of the muscle fiber. Simply put, caffeine may benefit the athlete by helping to produce a longer (and possibly stronger) muscle contraction.
Metabolism - The third theory involves the metabolic explanation of caffeine’s benefit to exercise performance. Caffeine increases the release of free fatty acids into the blood during exercise. The increase in fatty acid availability leads to increased muscle fat oxidation and decreased carbohydrate oxidation, thus sparing muscle glycogen for use later in exercise. The extra glycogen storage benefits the athlete by delaying the onset of fatigue.
At 59 years old, I’ve tried virtually every protein bar on the market. Ever since I switched to the DeFranco bar, I’ve noticed that my cravings for junk food have almost completely disappeared and my workouts have been much more intense. This combination has enabled me to get in the best shape of my life!”

The Chemistry of L-Tyrosine
yrosine
is an amino acid that the body synthesizes from the phenylalanine in your
body. Tyrosine is necessary for brain function and it’s a precursor of adrenaline and the “mood-elevating” neurotransmitters, norepinephrine and dopamine; These 2 neurotransmitters stimulate metabolism and the nervous system, while regulating mood. L-Tyrosine also blocks the absorption of tryptophan across the blood/brain barrier which is another way this amino acid helps “pick you up”.
Another benefit of L-Tyrosine supplementation is that it helps increase nerve transmission from the brain to the muscles. This excites more motor units which creates greater strength.
Tyrosine also suppresses the appetite, which can help reduce body fat.
